Story

Love Rooster

On a farm nearby, there’s a rooster who begins his day with a routine that is both meaningful and intentional. Today is extra special. You see, he has something important to do later, and he needs to be in the right state of mind. Nothing is going to throw him off his game. Not today.

As he exited the coop, he stretched his legs. First the left, then the right. Next, his wings. Flap one, two, three. A deep breath. Puff out the chest. Hold for two. Now, cock-a-doodle-doo!

In a hurry, the hens came bustling out in search of their morning meal. His flock’s clucking and clacking warmed him to his core. They were his everything. He lived to protect them. But more than that, he had the heart of a lover, and more than most roosters.

He knew each hen by her favorite treat. The insects she chased, the seeds she preferred, even her favorite flower. Today, he was working up the nerve to gift his dearest hen those very blooms. He had been planning it for a week, and still, the butterflies fluttered in his throat.

The time had come to secure the delicate love tokens. He ran to the gardener’s daisies, snatched two small blooms, and made a quick escape before being shooed away. Then he dashed to his beloved and proudly presented the fragrant gift.

She blushed. She smiled. She loved them. His heart pounded with joy. He had done it, and it had worked. For the rest of the day, he walked with his head high and his tail feathers tall and proud.

“To love at all is to be vulnerable.”

— C.S. Lewis
