Story:

Saved For Such A Time

Snip! I remember the sound well. Another flower now in her clutch. Every spring and summer it was the same. I carried the basket while Grandmother harvested blooms. She would gather like blooms together, wrap the ends in jute, and hang them to dry. Her walls and shelves were filled with these aromatic adornments. It was a sight imprinted on my senses forever.

In time, the nights began to cool and the sun went to bed sooner. The chill of morning lingered longer, the blooms faded, and the gardens grew dull.

A lover of beauty, Grandmother walked to the cellar to fetch a pumpkin. Carving out the insides, she placed the seeds in the oven to bake while scanning her walls for the perfect adornments to fill the lively vessel.

She rustled each preserved piece of sunshine into its spot, soft as the snips that began the season, until it could hold no more. Grandmother then laid out a freshly pressed tablecloth and runner, set the bursting arrangement in the center of the table, and suddenly the room was alive once more.

And now, as I sit at the table with the preserved scents of past seasons before me, I am reminded that endings, too, can be radiant.
